7-String Electric Guitar for Modern Metal

The Ibanez RGA742FM-TGF is a 7-string solid-body electric guitar built for players stepping into extended-range metal, djent, and progressive rock. A flamed maple top sits over a lightweight meranti body, keeping the instrument balanced on stage and in the studio. Factory tuning covers standard 7-string intervals with D'Addario EXL110-7 strings, so the guitar plays straight out of the box.

What Sets This 7-String Apart

Most 7-strings in this price tier ship with generic hardware, but this model carries Ibanez's Quantum 7 humbuckers — passive ceramic pickups voiced specifically for the low B string. The 5-way pickup selector unlocks parallel and split-coil voicings that standard 3-way guitars can't reach. An F107 fixed bridge anchors the strings solidly, which matters when dropping into low tunings where cheaper hardware can rattle or drift.

Body Construction — Lightweight Meranti with Flamed Maple Top

Body construction matters on any extended-range guitar, and this model keeps things light without sacrificing resonance. Meranti sits in the mahogany family, prized for warm midrange and reduced weight compared to basswood or alder.

• Body Material: Meranti — warm, woody mids in a lightweight package
• Top Material: Flamed Maple — visual depth with a subtle brightness to the attack
• Finish: Polished (Transparent Gray Flat) — protects the figured top while showing off the grain

Neck Profile — Wizard II-7 Built for Speed

Neck design is where 7-string guitars succeed or fail, and the Wizard II-7 profile is one of Ibanez's most respected shapes. Slim, flat, and reinforced with three pieces of maple, it stays stable under string tension across all 24 frets.

• Neck Type: Wizard II-7, 3-piece Maple — slim and flat for fast legato and sweep picking
• Fretboard Material: Jatoba — reddish-brown tonewood with rich mids and crisp highs
• Scale Length: 648 mm (25.5") — tight, focused low-end response for the B string
• Nut Width: 48 mm — wide enough for clean 7-string chord voicings without cramping

Electronics — Quantum 7 Humbuckers with 5-Way Switching

Electronics separate a serious metal machine from a beginner's curiosity, and this guitar ships with a properly voiced HH setup. Two Quantum 7 humbuckers feed a 5-way selector that opens up tonal options most HH guitars can't reach.

• Pickup Configuration: HH (Quantum 7 neck and bridge) — passive ceramic humbuckers voiced for extended-range playing
• Switching: 5-way pickup selector — adds parallel and split-coil voicings beyond standard 3-way setups
• Bridge: F107 fixed bridge — solid anchor for low tunings with independent string height adjustment
• Factory Strings: D'Addario EXL110-7 (.010–.059) — balanced tension across all seven strings

Who Should Play This 7-String

This model is the right choice for metal, djent, and progressive rock players who need a reliable 7-string without flagship pricing. Guitarists moving up from a 6-string will find the Wizard II-7 neck familiar and forgiving, while experienced players get a workhorse instrument with serious tonal range. The lightweight meranti body suits gigging musicians who don't want a heavy guitar pulling on their shoulder strap. Players who tune down to drop A or lower will appreciate the fixed F107 bridge and the .010–.059 string gauge that stays articulate under heavy picking.
