The Lichtlaerm Audio The Key and The Gate is a hand-built analog noise gate pedal that silences hiss and hum from high-gain rigs without choking sustain. Built in Berlin around a fully analog envelope follower, it reacts to playing dynamics in real time. The Key and The Gate is the right tool for guitarists who need transparent noise reduction that preserves long lead tones.

Keyed Side-Chain and Smart Relay

What separates this pedal from a standard noise gate is the dedicated KEY input and output on the side of the enclosure. Routing the unprocessed guitar signal into the KEY jack gives the gate a clean reference, so it stays open across heavy distortion and fuzz without false triggering. Smart Relay technology and a top-mounted main I/O pair complete the design.

Connections and Signal Routing

Two jack pairs let the gate sit anywhere in a chain.

• Inputs: 6.3 mm TS jack, KEY loop input — accepts instrument cable plus a clean side-chain feed
• Outputs: 6.3 mm TS jack, KEY loop output — sends the main signal onward and passes the clean guitar signal out
• KEY loop side-chain — routes the unprocessed guitar signal to the gate's reference input so it stays open across heavy distortion

Controls and Switching

Two knobs cover every adjustment, and relay-based true bypass keeps the dry signal uncolored when off.

• Controls: Threshold, Response — Threshold sets the trigger level; Response shapes release time across three positions
• True Bypass via Smart Relay — mechanical relay switching keeps the bypass path fully analog when the effect is off

Power and Construction

The pedal runs on a standard isolated supply and is handwired in Germany.
