Traditional powdered bole. Ultra‑finely ground natural clay intended for preparing the coloured ground layer in classical water gilding with gold or silver leaf.

Bole forms an elastic intermediate layer between the gesso ground and the gold leaf. It is a key component for achieving a flawless mirror‑like shine when burnishing gold with an agate stone. It is applied with a soft flat brush in 2 to 4 thin coats onto a smoothed gesso surface.

The powdered form gives gilders and restorers full control over the mixture’s density and choice of binder.
