To tune the kalimba, you need a tuning app or machine and a special tuning hammer. You can adjust the pitch by fine tuning the length of the slats.Using a tuning device. These will show you what the particular reed sounds like and how far it deviates from the desired pitch.Use of a tuning hammer: The slats of the kalimba are made of metal and the length of their vibration determines the pitch. If the sound is too low, the lamella must be gently tapped inwards from above, thus shortening the vibrating part.If the sound is too high, the lamella must be struck from the bottom outwards, so that the vibrating part becomes longer. Most 17-key kalimbas are factory tuned to C major. This is ideal for beginners, but of course you can change to other scales if you want a special sound. The reeds are fragile, so you should always hit them very gently to avoid deformation. Also, be careful not to accidentally touch adjacent reeds. The kalimba can easily become loose during transport or intensive use. It is advisable to check each lamella from time to time. There are different tuning charts (e.g. pentatonic scales) which open up new musical possibilities. If you are just starting out, it is advisable to stick to the factory tuning in C major, as most tutorials are geared to this.Do not use too much force, as the reeds may warp.Always check the tuning with a tuning instrument, not just by ear.If unsure, adjust in small increments and check the result often.
