William Alexander Chilton (December 28, 1950 – March 17, 2010) was an American musician known for fronting the Box Tops and Big Star. He achieved major success in the late 1960s as a teenager with the Box Tops, but his later work with Big Star and as a solo artist gained more critical respect than commercial hits. Despite limited mainstream recognition in his later years, Chilton became a major influence on indie and alternative musicians and is often credited as a key figure in shaping the sound of alternative rock. His legacy and impact were highlighted in the 2012 documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.
