Bobbie Gentry, born Roberta Lee Streeter in 1942, is an American retired singer-songwriter known for her groundbreaking role as one of the first women in the US to write and produce her own music. She gained international acclaim in 1967 with the chart-topping hit Ode to Billie Joe, which earned her two Grammy Awards. Over her career, Gentry had multiple hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and received further recognition for her album Fancy. After a successful period performing in Las Vegas, she retired from music in the late 1970s.
