Sonic Youth was an influential American rock band formed in New York City in 1981 by Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Lee Ranaldo, later joined by drummer Steve Shelley. Known for their experimental approach, they emerged from the city's no wave scene and became a pioneering force in noise rock and alternative music. Their innovative use of alternate tunings and unconventional guitar techniques helped push the boundaries of rock. After building a strong underground reputation with SST Records, they found wider success in the 1990s and 2000s with major label releases and high-profile performances. The band ended in 2011 following the split of Gordon and Moore, with the members stating there will be no reunion.
